Glow in the dark volleyball net: the best options

Playing volleyball outside is a lot of fun and sometimes you just can’t get enough of it and want to keep playing. Unfortunately, there are often no lights outside and it gets hard to see the action. A glow-in-the-dark net can be a solution to keep the fun going. Let’s take a look at the best options for this.

Best glow in the dark set-up for garden and beach volleyball

The easiest way to get started is to get some glow-in-the-dark tape that you stick over the net. You can use this tape to outline the court as well (over the current border lines). This type of tape is cheap to get and easy to apply and remove. Check that the tape doesn’t leave glue residues before applying it. This takes about 10 minutes to complete if you have to do the borderlines as well. Then you just need a glow-in-the-dark ball. The best ones are actually battery-powered as the ball needs to be bright enough to see it the whole time.

If you really want to make the whole net light up, you will need to get a special net. The following kit offers a battery-powered ball and a glow-in-the-dark net. Have realistic expectations when you buy it. The net and ball will light up and this will give a cool vibe. It is hard to play competitive games though as you can’t see all the details. You also have to make sure that you don’t run in other players. Everyone might have to wear a small light so that you can see where they are standing. It is best to get lights so that you can see where people are so that you can pass to them. Bring some spare ones as the batteries might stop working during an exciting rally.

Make sure that people don’t trip over things that are invisible. Some courts have support lines for the net that can stick out. It can be quite annoying if a player is falling over these.

A lot of people expect too much from this setup and get disappointed (I have been there!). This is why we suggest another solution as well for playing volleyball after sunset.

Alternative set-up for competitive volleyball matches after dark

Glow in the dark systems can be great as they give a special atmosphere. Sometimes you just want to play competitively and need more light. In the past few years, battery technology has evolved a lot and you can get great outdoor lights that don’t take up too much space and are actually quite affordable. Last month I used some flashlights and they worked great. These are waterproof and it is possible to set how the light should diffuse. With two flashlights, I was able to illuminate our court. Just make sure that you position them next to the net as they can shine in the eyes of the players otherwise.

The main advantage of this setup is that you don’t have to play with another ball. Everyone enjoys playing with their Mikasa ball. Some of the balls with batteries inside to create light are quite annoying to play with. Especially if you are playing with competitive players, they will start complaining about the ball and so on. This setup removes these arguments from the table and you can focus on playing the game.

These flashlights are waterproof, which is essential if you plan to play outside. You might need to adjust the settings to make sure that you get the desired results. Make sure that the whole terrain is illuminated, including the borderlines. If it is unclear where the court ends, it will lead to a lot of discussions. This setup is very easy to use and doesn’t take a lot of time. No need to replace the net, play with another ball or add tape to the court lines. The only thing that you have to take into consideration are the batteries of the flashlight. You can always bring spare ones if needed. Granted, the flashlights are not that cheap but a glow-in-the-dark setup will cost easily as much. You can use the flashlight in emergency situations as well so it is a pretty good buy. It can also illuminate the afterparty once the match is done.

The batteries in these flashlights should last a few hours so you can play a full match with them. Given that you can use them for other things in life as well, they are a good investment if you want to play volleyball after dark from time to time. They can get quite hot over time so place them in a safe location. What I like about these lights is that they are quite small. This makes sure that players won’t trip over them when they dive to keep the ball in the air.

The following flashlights are great as they can illuminate a big area. I was able to make it work with two flashlights but we were using a pretty small court. I used a table as a stand as it is better to shine these towards the ground so that they don’t blind a player during the match. You can lay them on the ground as well but this can distract some players. It can take some time to get them in the right position but it is not that difficult.

To conclude, we can state that there are great ways to play volleyball after dark, even when you don’t have electricity nearby. You can use glow-in-the-dark nets and balls. Don’t expect too much from this though as they are still quite dark. It can give a cool vibe but it is quite hard to play competitive games with this as not every aspect is that visible. To illuminate the whole court it is better to use flashlights or other light sources.
