How do you pick a volleyball jersey number? GET yours now

You can’t always pick your jersey number as other players on your team might have already picked theirs and it is not possible to have two players with the same number on one team as this would lead to confusion. You could negotiate with a player that has already picked your number to take it over if the competition hasn’t started yet. Furthermore, teams might already have the jerseys and you simply have to pick one out of these. This can severely limit the options that you have.

If the team is making new jerseys, you can have a wider range. Be sure to check with the coach and other players if a certain number is available. During practice, you can wear any number you want as this doesn’t matter that much. Players often have the same number for years so you have to spend some time thinking about what number you will wear as people might ask the meaning behind it. There are several ways to pick a number and we are going to discuss them here.

Can you wear any number in volleyball? Numbers to avoid on your jersey

You might want to pick numbers below 100 as jerseys don’t always have space for three digits. This already severely limits the number of choices that you have. Some numbers such as 13 can be avoided because they might bring a bad vibe. This is up to you and the team to decide if you want to use this or not. Some teams might turn down numbers that have certain negative connotations so check with your coach what is allowed and what is not.

You might also want to avoid numbers that are difficult to pronounce as the referee and people that keep the statistics have to utter that number quite a lot. You can make life easier for them by using numbers that are easy to pronounce.

You can also consider the aesthetics of numbers. Some combinations are more beautiful than others but this also depends on the font that is used on the jerseys. A six or eight is commonly seen as a beautiful number whereas a lot of people don’t like the symbol of seven. This is up to personal preferences and you have to see what you like the most.

At the end of the day, a number is also not that important. Just pick something that is free and that you like. Don’t spend hours or days thinking about it. This is time that could be spent working on your volleyball skills and at the end of the day, this will be a lot more useful than a number. You can always change it later on if you really don’t like the one that you have. You are probably not going to think about it after a few games. It is not worth it to have big fights over it with other players on your team as there are more important things in life than a number on a jersey.

How are players numbers assigned volleyball? Numbers to pick for your jersey

In most instances, volleyball players can pick their own jersey number (as long as it is not taken). It is also possible that the team assigns them based on your position on the court but this doesn’t happen very often. Below, we provide tips on how you can select yours.

You can use a number that refers to the year you were born in. This is often a year that is near and dear to your heart so it can be cool. It could be quite hard to get this as other players on your team might want it as well.

A number can also refer to your parent or your grandparents. It can be a show of respect and thankfulness for what they did for you and that they allow you to play volleyball. This is a really nice and personal gesture that your parents might appreciate, especially if you win the competition with that number.

You can also use a number that refers to the place where you were born. It can be the postal code or some coordinates.

It is also possible to pay tribute to another player. For example, a lot of people enjoy playing with the number 23 to pay their respect to the dedication and hard work that Michael Jordan put in during his career. He inspires a lot of athletes to perform at their best and people want to mimic this icon by using his number on their jerseys.

You can also use the number of matches that you have won so far as a number. It can motivate you to win more often as you want to increase the number over time.

A friend of mine used a number that reminded him of one of the previous coaches that told him that he wouldn’t amount to anything. This motivated him and kept him going during difficult times. When he was tired, he looked at the number and got ready to play again. This was a number that motivates him and he uses it as fuel to push him harder.

You can also pick a random number generator and go with that number. This makes the decision a lot easier as the software will pick a random number for you. It doesn’t have any meaning but that is also not necessary for a jersey number. I just picked a random number for my jersey and no one has ever asked me anything about it. It just feels good so I don’t worry too much about it.

To conclude, we can state that we provided some tips about how you can pick a number for your volleyball jersey. It is possible that certain numbers are not available as other people on your team are already using them.  There are some numbers that you might want to avoid. Other numbers can pay a tribute to another person or place. At the end of the day, the number doesn’t matter that much so you should just pick one instead of spending a long time thinking about this. After a few games, you are not going to focus on this anyway. Worst case you can always change the number.
