Creativity is very important in volleyball. If you use the same attack over and over again, the other team will be able to defend against it. Sometimes you don’t have any equipment and have to find a way to practice anyway We discussed how to practice volleyball without a volleyball before. In this post, we are going to discuss how you can improve your volleyball skills without a net or wall.
You can use a cord to create a net. Make sure that you don’t attach it to things that can break. Attaching it to a strong tree might be a good idea. This can give an indication of how high you have to send the ball and can make a makeshift alternative for a net. You can see if the ball goes over the cord. It is also possible to outline a court using a cord and this makes sure that you hit inside it.
- Setting and spiking
You can pass to yourself or a friend. If you use the cord again, you can give an assist to your friend and he or she has to spike after this. You can switch and both take up the role of the setter and spiker. This allows everyone to practice these skills.
Digging is a defensive move so you don’t need a net for this. Just throw the ball in front of you and keep it in the air. You can start by throwing it nearby you and push it further and further to keep it more challenging. If you play with a friend, he or she can throw the ball for you. Make sure to keep it challenging so that you get better at it.
You can use the cord again. Your friend pushes the ball over the cord and you have to stop it by blocking the ball. Be sure to practice your jump and timing. Technique is everything when it comes to blocking.
How to practice volleyball alone without a wall
A wall can be handy if you want to push the ball against it or to warm up your hands. You don’t need one if you want to practice. You can always go to the garden of a friend, a park or the sports arena if you don’t have a big garden. Here are some drills that you can do without a wall:
- Serving: This is harder to do in small areas. You can work on your timing and just throw the ball in the air and hit the ball softly. You can work on the different types of serves and make sure that you master the technique.
- Passing: You can pass to yourself by passing vertically. If you have friends, you can stand in a circle and pass to each other. You start slowly and gradually you start passing faster. The goal is to keep the ball in the air. It is also possible to let someone defend in the middle of the group. Once this player has catched the ball, someone else has to go to the middle.
- Setting: This is quite similar to passing but the ball has to go higher. You can once again pass to your friend. Make sure that the ball goes high enough.
- Attacking: Attacking is a skill that you have to develop over time. This is harder to do in a small area. You can aim at the bottom of the wall or fence so that the ball doesn’t go out of the garden. You can also slam to the feet of your friend. The ball can come quite fast so your friend has to be prepared to catch it.
- Blocking: Here jumping drills are interesting. You can jump a few times in a row and try to make yourself as tall as possible. You can also work on your technique by using the steps in the right order. This requires a lot of repetition and you can do this without a wall or ball.
- Digging: You can throw the ball in front of you and try to get it back up. You start by throwing it quite close by and you throw it in multiple directions. It is easier if your friend helps you out as it makes it more unpredictable where the ball will land. Once again, you don’t need a wall to do this.
