Volleyball nets: everything that you need to know.

Volleyball nets are very important as they affect the game. They take a very prominent place in volleyball and therefore there are a lot of rules and regulations about them. Let’s discuss these nets in further detail.

How high volleyball net: measured from the ground up?

This depends on the age and gender of the players. This allows everyone to play the game without having to struggle too much. Especially serving can be a challenge for newer players s you are standing quite far from the net to get started. Let’s take a look at the table below.

GenderAgeNet height (indoor volleyballà
Male under 127′
13-147′ 4 1/8″
Adult 7′ 11 ⅝”
Women under 12 6′ 6″
13-147′
Adult7 ‘ 4 ½ “

As you can see, how tall the volleyball net depends on a lot of factors. Given that players gain more strength as they get older, it often doesn’t take too much to adjust to the increased height.

Indoor volleyball nets are height adjustable. This makes it possible to change the net height between matches.  In official games, the referee often measures if they are the correct height to make sure that everything is according to the rules. There is a very simple tool to do this. This cord is rolled out and then the referee can just check if the net is at the correct height. This is often checked by the first referee before the game starts to avoid discussions afterward.

If you get a net at home, you might want to take a look at how high the net is so that you can get used to the height you will play at during matches. It can be really confusing to play with multiple net heights. The nets of Franklin Sports come in different editions and this allows you to pick the size and height that you need.

Nets that are adjustable in height are more expensive so you have to think if this is worth it for you. It might be better to buy two nets as height-adjustable nets are often installed with concrete as they have to carry a lot of weight.

Can you touch the net in volleyball? Net violation in volleyball

This depends on the level that volleyball is played at. In college games, it is allowed as long as the player is not interfering with the game or touching the ball while doing so. This is according to the NCAA volleyball rules. Given that volleyball players at this level are still learning to play, the rules are less strict and they are cut some slack.

In High school, it is not allowed to touch the net at all. The only exception is if your hair comes in contact with the net. These rules have been decided by the NFHS and have remained the same for years.

In professional games that follow the rules of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), it is not allowed to touch the net either. This will result in a point for the other team if it happens. You are allowed to hold back a player on your team if you see that they are about to touch the net. There is a nuance as players can touch the ball between the antenna and the pole as this is outside the playing field. This can be seen in action in the following video:

As you can see, there are differences between competitions and it can be a great idea to read the rules of the tournament or check with the referee before the match starts. In general, it is not allowed to touch the net. Even in beach volleyball, it is not allowed to do so. The goal is to avoid players bringing the net down so that it is easier to attack. This is also part of the rules to make sure that players don’t hinder the other team.

You can also get a card if you touch the net out of frustration between rallies. This could damage the net or delay the game. You can also get a card if you lower the net during a serve or match. This is an unfair move and referees are generally quite strict when it comes to this type of violation. Sportsmanship is expected of volleyball players so don’t mess around with the net as this is an essential part of the game.

Can you hit the net on a serve in volleyball?

Yes, you can hit the net on a serve as long as the ball goes over the net. This is a risky move though as the ball can’t drop too much. Therefore you might want to improve your technique if you notice that you hit the top of the net often.

Professional players can aim very well and often hit the net with the ball to confuse the defense. This makes it a lot harder to predict where the ball will land. Only the best players will dare to do this as a small difference can lead to a ball in the net. If there is one thing that professional players hate it is hitting the ball in the net as this is an unforced error.

Volleyball nets have a special cover on the top of the net to protect them when the ball goes over it. Serves can go quite fast so therefore the net needs to be rugged and be able to withstand a lot of power.

With the introduction of the jump serve, players hit the ball higher. This pushes the ball over the net more easily. In the past players used to stand still and this resulted in players hitting the net more often. Given that players spend a lot of timing perfecting their serve, they don’t hit the net too often anymore once they have played for a few years. When players are starting out or when they are nervous, it can happen that the ball hits the net when they serve.

So while the ball can hit the net when it goes over it while serving, you won’t see it happen too often as it is quite dangerous to do so.

Are badminton and volleyball nets the same?

No, there are big differences between volleyball and badminton nets

. For starters, the height of a volleyball net is 5’1”. There is a dip in the middle and the net is less high there. The width varies on how many people it is played with.

The height of a volleyball net is higher and is from the ground up 7 feet, 11 5/8 inches for men and 7 feet, 4 1/8 inches for women. The net has a width of 29.5′.  The height is constant over the whole width.

The look of the net is also different from indoor volleyball nets that have antennas. These colored metal rods are used to determine if the ball goes inside or outside the playing area.

Volleyball nets are a lot bigger as indoor volleyball is played with six players per team. Badminton is often played individually or with 2 players per team. This results in a smaller net as the court is smaller as well.

The materials that are being used in the net are often kevlar or rope in both instances. They also have a protective strip on top of both nets that makes the net last longer. Some volleyball nets also have this on the underside of the net. Given that volleyball nets are heavier, it needs wider poles to keep them standing. The nets also have to be adjustable in height, leading to a different structure. Badminton poles are often made out of steel. The heavier volleyball poles can be made out of steel as well but aluminum is used from time to time as well as this material is lighter.

So the size, structure, height, and poles are different. This clearly indicates that there are big differences between official volleyball and badminton nets. For at-home use, sometimes the same net is used for volleyball and badminton. This makes it easy to set up and store everything for a casual game.

What is an antenna in volleyball and how high is it?

An antenna is a part of the net in volleyball. There are antennas on both sides of the net and these indicate the beginning and end of the playing area. This makes it easy to see if the ball is inside or outside the allowed limits. The antenna extends 31.5 inches above the net. The total length of the antenna is longer so that it has enough stability. This lower part is covered by the net so it is not visible to the players. The antenna is made out of metal to make sure that it doesn’t bend or break when a ball hits it. They are quite durable and should last for several years.  The distance between the two antennas is 29.5 feet, the same as the width of a volleyball court.

The antenna has two colors: red and white. The colors are interchanged to make it easy to see. This makes it easier to see how high the ball is going.

It is not allowed to touch the antenna with the ball and this will result in a point for the other team. It is quite easy to see when the antenna has been touched as it will shake.

The ball can go as high as you want during a volleyball match, as long as it doesn’t hit the ceiling. Volleyball antennas are only used to indicate the width of the court, not the height of it. There are no height limits in volleyball.

Cheaper nets that you will get at home won’t have an antenna as this part of the net is quite expensive to manufacture. Beach volleyball nets have antennas as well for official matches. The goal is the same: indicating the playing court.

Can you go under the net in volleyball?

Yes, you can go under the net in volleyball but there are limitations. The centerline runs under the net. This line and the net separate the two teams. Players are not allowed to cross this line except if a part of the hand or foot still is on or just above the line. You can’t hinder the players on the other team when you do this. It is therefore allowed to go under the net with a part of the foot as long as it still touches the line. You can’t go over the line with both feet. So in general while you can go under the net, it will be only a small area of your body that can do this. You should avoid doing this as you can get a foot fault or hit the net with the ball. You are also not allowed to touch the net so you are walking a fine line when you are going under the net.

It is allowed to give your team members a nudge if they are about to go too far under the net. It can be difficult to slow down once you are this close to the net. If you are really going too fast, it might be a good idea to go in the net instead of under it. If you run into a player on the other side of the net, you might get a card from the referee as you shouldn’t touch other players.

This is why professional volleyball players avoid going under the net as they know that it is quite dangerous to do. If they are really not able to retrieve the ball in any other way, they will do it to keep the rally going.

In beach volleyball the rules are laxer. There it is allowed to go under the net as long as you don’t hinder the players on the other team. This is not easy to do as you might hit the net with the ball. You are allowed to go farther down the court of the other team. Let’s take at some beach volleyball rallies in which the players cross the line below:
