What is the most effective offensive play in volleyball? Best ways to attack

The goal of an offensive play in volleyball is to push the ball over the net and inside the court of the other team. The other team should not be able to keep the ball in the air. Once the ball hits the ground inside their court, your team scores a point.

There are six players on each indoor volleyball team so it is possible to create several combinations. In reality, we see that some players are specialized in attacking and they will often push the ball over the net. In beach volleyball, there are only two players on the field so there are fewer combinations possible when it comes to attacking. Let’s dive into the most effective offensive plays in volleyball.

Typical attack: from right side hitter to setter.

Volleyball players have several roles on the field. As you can see in the image below, each type of role has its own position on the court.  The setter is a player that stands in the front row (close to the net) and this player gives an assist. He or she receives the ball from the last row and has to pass it to the right-side hitter.

The right-side hitter has to push the ball over the net. This is often done with a lot of force, effect, and precision to make it hard to predict where the ball will land. Volleyball is a fast-paced sport and players have to be able to anticipate what everyone on the team is going to do. The setter has to guess where the outside hitter would like to receive the ball.

The outside hitter has to think about where the setter will send the ball. A team can function as a well-oiled machine over time and attacks can be really spectacular. The outside hitter has to evade the blocks of the other team so that he or she can find a weak point in the defense of the other team.

In some instances, the right-side hitter is not able to attack and another player has to take over this role. It is also possible that other players are faking an attack to distract the other team. This is a very effective type of attack as it can lead to unexpected results.

An attack doesn’t always need to use a lot of power. It is also possible to tip the ball and just drop it behind the net. As you can see there are a lot of combinations possible when attacking in volleyball. If you combine them, you can create a lot of variety in your attacks.

Back row attacks: innovative ways to attack

In the past, it used to be forbidden to attack from the back row. Now it is allowed to do so and this leads to new and innovative ways to attack. You can add a lot more diversity to your attacks when you do this as well. Often the attacks of teams are too predictable and the other team can block them or defend well against them. If you mix traditional attacks with fakes and back row attacks, you will be able to score a lot of points as the other team will have a hard time knowing what will happen next.

The angle of attack can have a big impact on the outcome. By turning your hand in a different position, you can affect the angle of attack. This can make it harder to defend. Back row attacks come from further down the field and the defending team might not be able to see the ball coming. This makes back row attacks very effective. They are harder to execute as you are standing far away from the net.

Serving: An easy way to score points

When one team scores a point, the game has to be restarted behind the court. The goal is to push the ball over the net and drop it in the court of the other team. This is a challenge as you have to make sure that it lands inside the court but you have to get the ball over the net as well.

Therefore you have to find the right amount of force that you are going to use. There are 3 main types of serves: topspin serve, floater, and jump float serve. A floater is hitting the ball with the palm of your hand. This allows you to target a specific part of the court and you can be very precise. The topspin serve allows you to add a lot of speed to the ball but you will be less precise.

This is done by folding your hand over the ball to add spin to it. The jump float serve is quite similar to a floater but you jump when you perform this. This can lead to special effects that make it unpredictable where the ball will land. Jump float serves are mainly done by more advanced players as it requires a lot of coordination and ball-handling skills. Let’s see how an Olympic medal winner for team USA explains a jump float serve.

Serving is a special skill and you will have to practice this a lot if you want to get great at it. It can be frustrating to your team if you hit the ball in the net over and over again or if you are not consistent. Therefore you have to make sure that you don’t let your team down and you have to perfect this skill.

To conclude, we can state that there are several ways to attack in volleyball. Each has its own unique advantages and disadvantages. Often it is best to combine them all so that you can surprise your opponent. A lot of teams play too predictable, making it easy to block their attacks. Volleyball is a team sport and you have to attack together.

If you can do so quite fast, it can be difficult to defend against this. Your team has to practice a lot. Every player has their own specialty and some players focus on attacking whereas others prefer to defend. The main attackers are the setter and right-side hitter. They have to practice their attack over and over again to perfect it.
